Position Overview

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Air (BOA), Air Quality Planning Section (AQPS), Monitoring Operations/Repair and Maintenance Unit is seeking to hire an Electronic Technician. The ideal candidate for this position will be organized, detailed and possess the ability to adapt to change in a collaborative, fast paced environment. The ideal candidate will also need to be able to communicate effectively verbally, electronically and in writing with both internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Functions

• Performs technical procedures necessary to operate and maintain the State’s ambient air monitoring electronic equipment for the Monitoring Operations Unit, Air Quality Planning Section, Air Pollution Control Division, Bureau of Air for equipment including Particulate samplers, ozone monitors, sulfur dioxide monitors, carbon monoxide monitors, nitrogen dioxide monitors, zero-air generators, ozone transfer standards, modems, data loggers, etc.
• Plans and performs maintenance, repair, calibration and retrofitting procedures to ensure proper operation of the State’s ambient air monitoring equipment.
• Diagnoses problems and modifies air monitoring instruments and calibration standards to insure longer monitoring life, and compatibility with the air monitoring network.
• Performs technical duties associated with the interfacing of analytical electronic instrumentation to computerized data collection and transmission systems.
• Properly installs new equipment at ambient air monitoring stations.
• Prepares written documentation of all activities including calibration worksheets and inventory tracking.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school supplemented by two years of technical school with coursework in electricity and electronics.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

• Prefers working knowledge of practical electronics theory and equipment circuitry and operation, maintenance, and repair.
• Prefers working knowledge of electronic testing equipment operation and application in diagnostic and calibration procedures.
• Prefers ability to read schematic diagrams of electronic circuitry in order to gain an understanding of circuit operation, normal performance characteristics, and diagnostic and adjustment procedures.
• Prefers an experienced ability to recognize and correct electronic equipment malfunctions.
• Prefers eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills in the use of hand tools to effect repairs to equipment.
• Prefers ability to utilize a personal computer with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel software.

Conditions of Employment

• Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
• Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties.
• Requires ability of climbing ladders, lifting, and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Requires the ability to pass a name-based background check.
